Sharon Day is getting closer and closer to being elected as the new US ambassador to Costa Rica.
The politician, a resident of South Florida, had a hearing before the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Wednesday.
Day, key piece of Donald Trump’s gear in this state, said she was honored to be taken into account for the position. Likewise, she highlighted the commercial ties between the two countries.
I have been blessed to witness directly the natural beauty of Costa Rica, its biodiversity, its culture and the kindness of its people. USA And Costa Rica share a long and close relationship that focuses on the commitments of our countries with democratic principles, strong commercial ties and the relationship between our people. The strong bilateral relationship between our two countries is reinforced by long-standing and significant ties,”
Day told senators in a statement.
Day stood out in professional experiences linked to the commercial and insurance sectors and she was one of the main voices in favor of Trump during his campaign. She even stood out as a speaker at the GOP Convention, held in Ohio last year.
Likewise, she had experience as co-chair of the Republican National Committee.
At the hearing, Day was in front of Rubio, who was also a pre-candidate for the US presidency.
They both have a close relationship, as Day collaborated with Rubio to achieve his election as a senator in 2010.
It is someone I know personally and who I have known for a significant period of time. She is a dedicated person, a worker, a friend. I’m glad you’re here today. I am encouraged that the president has nominated you and that you will represent our country well in Costa Rica,”
said Rubio.
Day assured that they were aware of the significant visit of US tourists to Costa Rica (1.2 million in 2016) and the 160 thousand citizens who reside here. Therefore, maintaining a good relationship is crucial.
Continuing the bilateral relationship with Costa Rica is of vital importance. When you have a strong and safe country, it stops many of the problems,”
said the policy.
The appointment of Day would be confirmed in the coming weeks by the US Senate.
She would take the place occupied so far by Stafford Fitzgerald Haney, who arrived in mid-2015.
