Venezuelan Parliament says early elections are a coup d’état

The Venezuelan parliament, which has an opposition majority, believes the government’s proposal to have early legislative elections and join them to the presidential elections on April 22nd -corresponding to 2020- is an “attempted coup d’etat.”

This attempt of coup d’etat aims at evading the control of the national public administration that constitutionally corresponds to this National Assembly,”

indicated this Thursday a statement of the camera.

For the Legislative, the proposal is proof of the totalitarian purpose of the government of Nicolás Maduro to control all public powers through a mega electoral simulation. The Parliament is the only power controlled by the opposition.

The number two of the ruling United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), Diosdado Cabello, said he will propose the joined elections to the ruling Constituent Assembly, which rules in Venezuela with full powers. Maduro supported the idea and proposed to also elect regional legislators and municipal mayors the same day, even though their terms have been expired since 2016 and 2017, respectively.

Let’s go to a powerful election (…) and clear four years (no elections) to devote ourselves to the work of economic prosperity,”

said the president.

The presidential elections were due to take place in December and were carried out by the Constituent Assembly, which won’t be recognized by the opposition and part of the international community.

The National Assembly affirmed that by focusing its effort on political confrontation the government intends to evade responsibilities on the socio-economic crisis, with hyperinflation and an acute shortage of food and medicines.
