Venezuela’s Foreign Minister says Costa Rica is an instrument of the United States

An official statement by the Costa Rican Foreign Ministry raised a storm of attacks from Jorge Arreaza, the Venezuelan foreign minister.

The Costa Rican government announced that it did not recognize the results of the regional elections held on Sunday in that South American country, plagued by a political and social crisis.

That position was enough for Arreaza to accuse the Costa Rican government of ‘attacking Venezuela’ because of a ‘low popularity’.

Through a series of messages published on Twitter, the Venezuelan diplomat said that Costa Rica

shows an embarrassing submission as a US government instrument to attack democracy”

in his country.

With its insolent statement, the Foreign Ministry of Costa Rica demonstrates arrogance and absolute ignorance about the Venezuelan political reality … The low popularity of Costa Rica’s government makes it impossible for them to emulate electoral victories such as those of the Bolivarian Revolution. They would love to have the strong popular support the Bolivarian Revolution has in Venezuela,”

said Arreaza.

According to the politician, who is married to one of Chávez’ daughters, no government has the power to ‘recognize or ignore’ voting processes carried out in Venezuelan territory.

Arreaza was vice president of Venezuela from April 2013 to January 2016. He has served as chancellor since last August. However, during Chávez’s administration he held multiple positions in ministries and vice-ministries.
