Volunteers collected 174 kilos of garbage in Tamarindo

On January 1st, a photograph showing the state of Tamarindo after the New Year’s Eve party went viral. Many users criticized and pointed out those responsible, but a group of volunteers from the 5minutebeachcleanup Foundation decided to clean up, thus giving a true example to the whole country.

Plastic bottles, lids, cans, and cigarettes were part of the 174 kilos of garbage that they collected over two days of cleaning.

Mauricio Cortés, director of the foundation, said that they did it with the organization The Clean Wave and the Ocaso Festival, in order to help the environment.

“Tamarindo was very contaminated on January 1st and we as a foundation had talked with the organizers of the electronic music festival, so we could do two beach cleanings. The first one was on January 3rd and the other on January 8th,” said Cortés.

Forty-eight volunteers participated in the cleaning, leaving the beach and some areas of the Tamarindo center intact.

According to Cortés, the 5minutebeachcleanup Foundation aims for each person in the world to devote five minutes of their time on the beach to clean it and thus cooperate with nature.
