On December 5th, 3,320 kilos of solid waste were collected on national beaches, as a result of the efforts of more than 400 volunteers.
This was the first edition of the Mega Beach Cleanup Marathon in which hundreds of volunteers collected waste and single-use plastics on 10 beaches simultaneously. The initiative seeks to reaffirm before the entire planet the country’s commitment with the conservation of the environment and the cleanliness of these beaches.
Volunteers worked from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm cleaning the different beaches. In the Caribbean area, specifically in Cieneguita, 320 kilos of waste were collected, while in the Pacific 665 kilos were collected in Jacó, 230 kilos in Puntarenas, 200 kilos in Langosta, 220 kilos in Tamarindo, 670 in Bajamar, 330 in Dominical, and 470 in Playa Azul. In the Playa Hermosa Conservation Area, the volunteers had the task of cleaning the beach of organic waste that negatively impact the spawning of turtles.
This activity was conceived by the Association Costas del Surf (ACOS), through its environmental division ACOS Verde, and Bridgestone, together with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) as part of the celebration of the international day of volunteers, and taking up the #YoMeComprometo of the National Strategy for the Replacement of Single Use Plastics, an initiative of the Government of the Republic, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Environment, and the CRUSA Foundation.
At ACOS we are committed to these initiatives that seek to have a positive impact on the environment, especially in our seas. While volunteering we also educate people to achieve the reduction of single-use plastics, which are the main pollutants,”

The ACOS Green division of the Association seeks to continue developing environmental conservation initiatives such with the support of major international actors such as UNDP and the cooperation of government agencies and private companies committed to the environment.
