The Project of Reforestarion of Parque Metropolitano La Sabana began its seventh edition this week with the planting of 86 native trees.
Volunteers from Scotiabank, Re Consultoria, Crown Plaza and La Piedad planted species such as Guayacan Real, the heaviest wood in the world.
It is a very slow-growth species that is in critical danger of extinction. We have already planted two other trees in this Park, which are already in the flowering stage. It is important to note that this year we have identified 22 bird species that had not previously been seen in the Park, which indicates that the impact of reforestation has been very positive,”
explained Armando Soto, Scotiabank Technical Coordinator for the Reforestation Project of La Sabana.
The initiative, led by the Costa Rican Institute of Sport and Recreation -ICODER- and Scotiabank, aims to plant 600 trees in 2017.
Our final goal is to transform La Sabana into an urban forest. Little by little the park has been transformed, giving space to new native species,”
said Rocío Zamora, Public Relations Manager of Scotiabank.
The trees that will be planted this year came two years ago to the nurseries of the National Power and Light Company (CNFL) and the La Reforma Penitentiary Center, about 30 cm high. Now, after the process of previous growth and development, they have a size of 2.3 meters and are ready to be planted in La Sabana.
