Western cantons may attract more foreign investment

The installation of free zones in the Western Region of Alajuela will have better conditions, after the approval in the second reading of a new regulation by the Legislative Assembly.

The law will equalize the incentives received by companies in the free zones that are installed in the cantons of Grecia, Valverde Vega, Naranjo, Palmares, and San Ramón with those of companies outside the Greater Metropolitan Area (GAM).

Javier Cambronero, from the Citizen Action Party (PAC) and promoter of the initiative, explained that the current law of free zones contains two categories of incentives for companies between the Large Metropolitan Area, which includes western cantons, and those of the rest of the country.

In his opinion, it is an unfair disadvantage and an obstacle to the attraction of investments to the Western Region.

The legislator recalled that Costa Rica is a highly centralized country in the GMA, for which he insisted on the need to promote development in peripheral areas.
