What does the green alert due to ashfall mean?

Given the constant ashfall emanating from Turrialba Volcano, the National Emergency Commission (CNE) declared a green alert in the Central Valley of the country.

What does this mean?

The green alert is for information only and it’s declared when a phenomenon, in this case the emanation and ash, could affect or endanger the population of a region.

When this alert -the lightest of all- is activated, there are three actions to follow:

Inform the population and institutions about the phenomenon.
Monitor the phenomenon.
Communicate the activity to the relevant authorities.

Turrialba Volcano’s activity also maintains a yellow alert for the cantons of Turrialba, Alvarado and Oreamuno.

Unlike the Central Valley, these three cantons from Cartago could suffer damages to the agricultural activity.

In these sites preventive measures are taken, including having prepared emergency equipment, activating safety devices and preparing search and rescue resources.
