Last week, a group of 71 Cubans tried to enter Costa Rica claiming that the Panamanian police told them that Costa Rican authorities would let them cross the border.
However, when they arrived at Paso Canoas border in the south of Costa Rica, they were assured that authorities has not issued any authorization to enter the country.
Since then, they have been waiting for some of the governments to give them a solution. Their conditions are deplorable.
Rigoberto Pitti, a sociologist and member of the National Office of the Justice and Peace Commission of the Catholic Church in Panama, said that in addition to this group of 71 people, there are 240 more people in Panama.
All the islanders will be transferred to another hostel called Los Planes in the district of Gualaca, province of Chiriquí, one hour away from the Costa Rican border. However, Cubans’ future is uncertain.
Norman Rivera, a neighbor from Paso Canoas and a community leader, said that they Called on the Costa Rican authorities to give a clear position on the future of Cuban migrants.
