Can the country have an interoceanic highway if in 8 years, 3 presidents and 7 transport ministers have failed to repair La Platina? According to current Minister of Transport Carlos Villalta, it is very possible.
The minister declared that La Platina is a different project and it can’t be compared to anything because it has a completely different concept. He added that it they are building a a mega container terminal in Moín, the construction of the interoceanic highway is completely feasible.
the MOPT announced the proposal submitted by “Canal Seco de Costa Rica” (CANSEC), a group of companies that aims to create a 315-kilometer highway network with 10 tracks, which would make the country a world leader in the transportation of products.
Executive President of CANSEC Lucia D’Ambrosio stated that although the project must go through a bidding process like any other, it is “almost certain” that they are going to win. She added that the strategy they are using gives them the opportunity to move forward even before the project’s approval.
Regarding the enviromental impact, D’Ambrosio said that there is nothing to worry about, as no highway work is inside protected areas.
The Interoceanic Highway costs 8,960 billion colones and according to authorities, it could become a reality in the next 6 years.
