In the next month, the country could see an increase in vector-borne diseases such as zika, chikungunya and dengue, following storm Nate in and the rains of these days.
In the last two weeks these diseases showed an increase: zika had 23 more cases, chikungunya 3 and dengue 123. However, the Ministry of Health indicated that this cannot be attributed to the storm.
The Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS) warned about this possibility a few weeks ago.
Dr. Daniel Salas, Health Surveillance Ministry, said that several weeks are necessary to see the possible effects of Nate on this issue, and explained that the increase could be related to clusters in some areas.
The health authorities have already initiated a reinforcement of preventive actions, especially in the most affected communities and shelters.
